Koutsouras is a coastal village of Stavrochori Community of Lasithi Prefecture, east of Ierapetra. It is the seat of the Municipal unit of Makris Gialos of the Municipality of Ierapetra. Its distance from the city of Agios Nikolaos is 58 kilometers, from Ierapetra 22 kilometers and from Sitia 37 kilometers. The inhabitants are mainly engaged in agriculture (cultivation of early horticulture, olive growing) and, secondarily, in tourism professions.

In Koutsouras one can see the grove of Apiganias, with infrastructure for hosting concerts and various cultural events. A gorge also starts from the grove, which after half an hour’s journey, ends at a small church. Furthermore, the beach has dark ash pebbles and has been awarded blue flags by the European Union.

The village owes its name, according to the prevailing version, from the logs, which came from the cutting of pine trees, which was done in the area for the purpose of systematic cultivation. Another similar version states that the surface waters carried wood (logs) from the surrounding mountainous areas to the plain of Koutsouras.
