When thinking about Ierapetra, your first thoughts are usually sand beaches, picturesque seaside villages, and gorgeous summer weather. However, Ierapetra is a fantastic winter destination, and spending Christmas in Ierapetra can be an unforgettable surprise!
Settting the ultimate Christmas goal!
In 2024, Ierapetra set a goal—and ultimately achieved it. As a result, the city transformed itself for the holidays, spreading Christmas joy to everyone who passed through.
Moreover, Europe’s southernmost city has now entered the competition for Crete’s top festive destinations, unveiling decorations that amazed both residents and visitors. For the first time ever, Ierapetra glowed with brilliant lights, and consequently, it captured public attention and lit up social media.
The biggest surprise this year? Surprisingly, the enchanting makeover was created entirely by volunteers—mainly the mayor’s family, advisors, deputy mayors, and their loved ones. They themselves took to the streets to bring this impressive spectacle to life. In fact, preparation started three months earlier, and throughout that time, the team worked nonstop to realize their vision.
Furthermore, every decoration is handmade, from candy cane–style lamp posts to whimsical “lollipop trees” brightening the city’s squares and streets. As a result, the volunteers fully delivered on their ambitious plan, decorating 300 trees and more than 300 poles.
Naturally, residents are delighted. “Ierapetra has never looked like this before!” many said. Likewise, visitors from nearby areas are now heading to the city to admire the already-famous candy cane lamp posts. Meanwhile, the decorations have exploded on social media, filling Instagram and Facebook feeds with photos.
Finally, the “SantaGerapetros elves” aren’t stopping here—on the contrary, they aim to make Ierapetra Crete’s ultimate Christmas destination. So, don’t waste time and plan your next trip. “Get ready for #SantaGerapetros2025!
